The Holiday Wishes campaign will award $250,000 in grants—$100,000 for first place, $50,000 for second, $25,000 for third and from $5,000 to $10,000 to 10 runner-up organizations.
All entries must be submitted by Nov. 22. The winner will be announced in December.
"By sharing some of their stories through this campaign, we hope to raise awareness and increase the number of animals spending this holiday season where they belong: in loving homes with the care and support they deserve,” said Susanne Kogut, executive director of Petco Foundation.
The sponsors are looking for a story about one animal saved by a rescue group since July 1, 2011.
"We recommend that your submission be short, concise and explain as much of the following information as possible: the condition of the animal on intake, any known information about why the animal was in a situation of need, the work that your organization did to save the animal, and any information about the new home and family,” according to the contest rules.
Story narratives are limited to 500 words, but photographs and videos will be accepted as well.
Halo, based in Tampa, Fla., makes dog and cat food, treats, supplements and grooming products.
"We want to help all of the pet shelters that help animals and do good every year,” said talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, a company co-owner. "The Petco Foundation wants to award deserving animal shelters.”
More details about the contest are available at PetcoFoundation.org.
