The Veterinary Hospital Locator, available at mda.maryland.gov/vetboard, identifies nearby clinics, lists the clinic’s owner and hours of operation, and reveals whether after-hours emergency care is available.

"A pet owner can spend a lot of time trying to find the closest animal hospital that offers the services and the hours they want,” said St. Mary’s County veterinarian Chris Runde, DVM, the board’s chairman. "This new tool will help them conduct that search much more quickly and accurately.”

The map also may help practitioners locate another hospital for referral purposes, Dr. Runde said.

A pet owner who types an address or city into the website’s search field will see a map displaying the closest veterinary hospitals. Users may zoom out on the map to see additional clinics.

The application also allows users to get directions to a clinic, measure distances between locations, print a map and share it through Twitter and Facebook.

The State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners oversees Maryland’s 530 licensed veterinary hospitals and 1,557 licensed and registered veterinarians.

The online map will be updated at least twice a year.
