The dirty dog, River, was nominated by his owner in October during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, an effort designed to call attention to rescue animals and make them more presentable to prospective owners.

"Grooming is important to the health of our pets, but it’s critical to the adoption of dogs who are abandoned to shelters and need new families,” said Karen Hollish, program marketing manager at Petfinder Foundation, a contest co-sponsor. "While there are many hurdles to dog adoption, one of the ongoing challenges rescue groups and shelters face is access to much-needed grooming supplies.”

River’s nominated shelter, Secondhand Hounds Rescue in Minnetonka, Minn., received a $5,000 grant and grooming supplies.

Owners of dogs in need of a bath submitted more than 350 entries on Wahl’s Facebook page in October. Dog lovers voted for their favorites in November from among 25 finalists.

The second- and third-place finishers were Nancy, representing Texas Gulf Coast Bull Terrier Rescue in Houston, and Coco Chanel, representing Fluffy Dog Rescue in Nashville, Tenn. Each shelter received $1,000 and grooming supplies.

"The hope is that these additional grooming supplies will help care for any animals taken in through the holiday season,” said Shay Moeller, product manager at Wahl, a Sterling, Ill., manufacturer of grooming tools, shampoos and sprays.
