Letter From the Editor: A Passion for Writing
Veterinary Practice News columnist Phil Zeltzman, DVM, last month marked the second anniversary of his website.
The board-certified surgeon, who writes our monthly feature Surgical Insights, is passionate about his site and its offspring, a pet health newsletter that goes to all 50 states and 15 other countries.
His motivation is to provide reliable information to counter all the incorrect drivel that pet owners find online.
“Veterinarians across the nation often see the results of these loving but uninformed owners who followed bad advice from unreliable sources,” says Dr. Zeltzman, who practices in Whitehall, Pa. He has made it his mission to help pet lovers find reliable information.
His website lists hand-picked websites that pet owners can rely on.
The newsletter takes that mission a step further. Recent topics included arthritis treatment, pet obesity and cancer. He also interviews veterinary specialists and describes real-life situations encountered in his clinic.
“It has been a success beyond my wildest dreams,” Zeltzman says of his newsletter. “What started out as a free confidential newsletter written as a thank-you to my clients for their trust has spread like a wildfire. Through word of mouth, pet lovers and veterinarians started subscribing all over the country and abroad.”
One of the things I like about the newsletter is it gives other clinics ideas for working in their communities—such as pet fairs featuring a joint human/animal blood drive.
Does your clinic have a website or newsletter? Tell me about it.
