Barbaro Memorial Fund Backs Laminitis Research

Posted: Friday, December 5, 2008, 7:42 p.m., EST

Barbaro Memorial Fund Backs Laminitis ResearchThe National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s subsidiary, NTRA Charities, recently handed out $90,801 in support of laminitis research.

The money was distributed from the NTRA Charities Barbaro Memorial Fund, established in memory of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, who succumbed to laminitis in 2007.

One new and two continuing research projects will be funded. The new study, “Effect of Digital Hypothermia on Inflammatory Injury in Laminitis,” by James Belknap, DVM, Ph.D., of Ohio State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is a two-year project funded for $82,109.

The continuing projects, which will collectively receive $8,692, are “Targeting 5-HT in Equine Laminitis,” by Douglas Allen, DVM, at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and “Treatment of Equine Laminitis with Doxycycline,” by Susan Eades, DVM, Ph.D., at the Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.

Both continuing studies, which originally were funded with $100,000 from the Barbaro fund to the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation in 2007, are on schedule to complete research papers for peer-reviewed scientific journals. <HOME>

I'm not sure where you get your information, but a great deal is being done about racehorse retirement and slaughter. Some individual tracks have begun to ban trainers who sell horses to slaughter. Also, racehorse rehoming and retirement programs are being formed with the Jockey Club and NTRA help. In fact, the Jockey Club has taken more responsibility for their horses than most breed associations. Perhaps you should check out the NTRA website, where they constantly update information, instead of spouting outdated information to fuel PETA and anti-racing fires, hmm?

While we all know how important laminitis research is, it would be beneficial if the NTRA cared that much about funding for the retirement of racehorses. The NTRA has provided millions to the Barbaro laminitis fund but nothing to racehorse retirement . The disgraceful and brutual slaughter of thousands of racehorses goes on in Canadian and Mexican slaughter houses daily , as the horses who run for their lives and support all the mangement, owners, trainers, NTRA, HBPA and casinos get NOTHING. How can this industry be proud until they take care of these horses . Why is it no one in positions of power think the horses should have a safety net for thier lives. NO it is just what else can we do to them to make them run faster, farther until we dispose of them. The priorites are mis guided, greed and selfishness is what the Thoroughbred system is all about, it is not about racehorse welfare.
