Nature’s Variety Recalls Dog Food Due to Odor

Posted: July 12, 2012, 3:30 p.m. EDT

Nature’s Variety recalled several bags of Prairie Beef Meal & Barley Medley Kibble for Dogs due to an off-odor smell that may develop over time, the Lincoln, Neb.-based company reported today.

The dog food is not contaminated, but some products are not remaining fresh over the course of their shelf life. The company detected the defect through its internal quality control process, but has not yet determined the source of the odor, the company said.

I am very concerned. My three cats are on Nature's Variety Instinct foods, kibble and canned, because of serious IBD. The Rabbit canned has already been "temporarily discontinued" because of problems with supplied of rabbit, allegedly from China. This is the only flavor they actually tolerate, but because of the small fortune I have spent getting them on the "novel food" diet to remedy IBD, I have to buy it. These are premium foods, at very high prices. To see that they are subject to recall because of "off odors" makes me fearful that other foods in their line may be hazardous to the health of the three cats who are my only family.
