Animal Shelters Vie for $500,000 in Adoption Contest

Fifty animal shelters across the United States are competing for more than $500,000 in grants through the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

The shelters will attempt to adopt out at least 300 more cats and dogs during August, September and October 2012 than they did during the same period in 2011. The shelter that increases its year-over-year adoptions by the greatest number over the three months will win the $100,000 grand prize.

“We’ve been watching as the contestants gear up for events and get the most wonderful animals ready for adoption,” said Bert Troughton, vice president of community outreach for the ASPCA. “In this competition, everybody wins–especially the animals!”

The contestants and their supporters are promoting the competition through Facebook and the Twitter hashtag #100KChallenge.

In addition to the grand prize, the ASPCA will award $25,000 to the second-place finisher and $25,000 to the contestant that does the best at engaging its community members, the ASPCA reported. Organizations that perform the best in each division will be eligible for prizes of $5,000 to $40,000.

In total, more than $500,000 will be awarded to participating shelters.

I read this article on the Humane Society Adoption contest and It made me sad and discouraged. We need contests or appropriations for "things" like "mobil clinics" that make a difference. Not just $$. After my 12 year old daughter and I visited the beautiful U.S. Island of Puerto last year to help Katie Block w/ Island Dog.com; my daughter wanted to spend her birthday and spring break "saving" animals. With so much focus on the end, even my now 13 year old aspiring vet realized the solution is #1) Spay & neutering #2) Local govt. must make this a priority and use allocated funding appropriately. and #3) Education. In this case Katie is "doing the right thing" on her own w/out any Govt. funding. She realized the solution is spay & neutering plus, education, but w/o funding continues to loose ground. She needs a mobil vet clinic and volunteer vets. My daughter and I are trying to help figure out a way from across the country and inbetween school and two jobs.. My daughter and I saw first hand the neglect and miss appropriation by the local humain society Humana. Just down the street and next to the freeway on ramp that leads to that facility was a dog starving to death locked behind the gate of a closed factory. I would like to see a contest to "Win a mobil clinic", not just $$$ , that will certainly change an "Island" or community along Wher education is key. If my 12 year old can help save a few dogs by spay&neutering (called the red collar dog project) educate and create hope for the wonderful people we met along the way then so can a contest with a "solution".
