Purina Invites Public to Vote for Team Cat or Team Dog

Posted: Oct. 9, 2012, 4:30 p.m. EDT

Is the United States a cat nation or a dog nation?

That age-old debate may be settled in a vote sponsored by St. Louis-based Purina.

Through Nov. 8, 2012, pet owners may choose to become a member of Team Cat or Team Dog at www.AmericasPetDebate.com or www.Facebook.com/AmericasPetDebate. For each vote cast, Purina will donate $1, up to $100,000, to Pet Partners, a Bellevue, Wash., nonprofit group that provides animal-assisted therapy to military veterans.

America's Pet Debate
The campaign enlisted two celebrities: National Football League legends Terry Bradshaw, a devoted dog person, and Howie Long, a committed cat. owner.

“Dogs have been a part of my life since my earliest childhood memories,” Bradshaw said. “I can’t imagine coming home and not having at least one dog greet me.”

Long countered with an argument on behalf of cats: “My family and I rescued our cats when they were just kittens and gave them a safe home. Our cats have given us a lot back. They like you every day no matter what, even if you’ve had a bad day.”

Participants unsure about their vote may take a brief quiz to determine whether they’re with Team Cat or Team Dog.

“America’s Pet Debate is a fun break from some of the more serious issues that we face everyday and allows us to take some time to explore the joyful reality of owning a pet,” said Brenda Bax, director of the Purina Pet Acquisition Team.

The American Pet Products Association’s 2011-2012 Pet Owners Survey appeared to show more love for dogs than cats, with canines in 46.3 million households and felines in 38.9 million households.
