The Veterinary Policy Group and two other standing committees of the British Veterinary Association have newly elected leaders.

Bill McKelvey, BVMS, Ph.D., the former CEO and principal of the Scottish Agricultural College, was named chairman of the Veterinary Policy Group, which advises the BVA council on veterinary subjects of national interest. Among the issues being considered are bovine tuberculosis, pet travel and the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Dr. McKelvey is vice chairman of the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute in Northern Ireland. A member of the Veterinary Policy Group since 2011, he previously served on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Governance Review Group.

The BVA also reported today that Madeleine Campbell, BVetMed, Ph.D., Dipl. ECAR, was elected to lead the Ethics and Welfare Group, which is working on issues such as the welfare of racehorses and slaughter animals and the use of animal snares.

A former president of the British Equine Veterinary Association, Dr. Campbell is the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow in Veterinary Ethics at the Royal Veterinary College. She is researching the ethics of assisted reproductive techniques in nonhuman mammals.

Adele Williams, BVSc, Dipl. ECEIM, was chosen to head the Overseas Group, which collaborates with veterinary associations globally and promotes animal and human welfare in the developing world.

She has been involved in overseas charitable projects in Romania, Ukraine and Gambia, and next year she will serve as a lecturer in equine medicine at the University of Surrey School of Veterinary Medicine.
