Veterinary Management Institute Moves to Colorado State

Posted: Nov. 27, 2013, 1:45 p.m. EST

Colorado State University is the new home of the Veterinary Management Institute (VMI), which for 23 years brought veterinary professionals to Purdue University for advanced studies of management theory and principles.

The American Animal Hospital Association is sponsoring the redesigned program, which consists of 83 hours of continuing education over 10 months.

 Business Meeting
The first of three on-campus sessions in the inaugural Veterinary Management Institute will run from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1, 2014.
"VMI has long been the leader for advanced management education in our profession,” said AAHA chief Michael Cavanaugh, DVM, Dipl. ABVP. "We’re working hard to make the new VMI an invaluable program to veterinary practice managers and owners.”

The first on-campus classes will kick off Jan. 30 and last three days. The completion of three in-person sessions along with online classes, work groups and discussions will earn students a certificate.

Credits may be applied to CSU’s Online Professional MBA program.

Among the topics studied will be strategic decision making, financial management, services marketing, inventory and demand management, supervision and conflict management, and strategic entrepreneurship. Lecturers will include professors from CSU’s College of Business and experts in the business and veterinary worlds.

"This move … leverages the strengths of our top-ranked veterinary medicine program and College of Business to benefit veterinary professionals and communities across the country,” CSU President Tony Frank said.

AAHA also collaborated with Purdue on the former Veterinary Management Institute. Purdue has since renamed it the Veterinary Practice Management Program and geared it for veterinarians, practice managers, technicians and students.

Launched in September, Purdue’s Veterinary Practice Management Program is a partnership between the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Krannert School of Management.
