Advantage Multi May Be Used on Ferrets

Posted: Dec. 23, 2013, 5:00 p.m. EST

Advantage Multi, a topical medication from Bayer Animal Health, may now be used to treat circulating heartworm microfilaria in dogs and to combat fleas and heartworms in ferrets, the company reported Dec. 20.

The indications, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, make Advantage Multi (imidacloprid and moxidectin) the first such product labeled for use on ferrets.

"This is particularly important for veterinarians that treat the nearly 750,000 ferrets in the U.S.,” said Robert Zolynas, DVM, MBA, vice president of research and development at Bayer HealthCare Animal Health in Shawnee, Kan.

Advantage Multi for Dogs and Advantage Multi for Cats are prescription-only products available from a licensed veterinarian or veterinary pharmacy.
The approved ferret medication is Advantage Multi for Cats in the 0.4 mL size only. It is indicated to prevent heartworm disease, kill adult fleas and treat flea infestations in ferrets.

Heartworms affect ferrets, dogs and cats similarly, the American Heartworm Society noted. The same fleas that target dogs and cats also infest ferrets, Bayer added.

Advantage Multi for Dogs is now the only FDA-approved product labeled for the treatment of microfilaria, the first life stage of heartworm, Bayer stated. The drug also is newly approved to treat and control sarcoptic mange, which causes intense itching and may lead to hair loss, reddened skin, body sores and scabs.

"The new indication for Bayer’s Advantage Multi for Dogs as the first treatment for heartworm microfilaria … will aid veterinarians’ efforts to keep dogs healthy and reduce the heartworm infection pool,” Dr. Zolynas said.

Advantage Multi for Dogs previously was approved for monthly, year-round topical application on dogs to prevent heartworm disease, kill adult fleas and treat flea infestations, and treat and control roundworms, hookworms and whipworms.

Advantage Multi for Cats’ longstanding approval was for monthly, year-round topical application to prevent heartworm disease in cats, kill adult fleas and treat flea infestations, treat and control ear mites, and treat and control roundworms and hookworms.

Both products are available by prescription only.

Sounds like great news on the face of it, but the label warning says not to use on ferrets under 2lbs...which excludes a high number of sprites.

As a ferret shelter op, I still prefer to use Selamectin which can easily and safely be measured and administered according to the weight of the ferret, whether it comes from a dog or a cat vial.
