New Test Can Determine Breed Mix

Brought to you by

Mars Veterinary, a new division of Mars Inc., plans to launch a DNA-based mixed breed test for dogs this summer.

The Wisdom Panel MX is said to identify more than 100 American Kennel Club-recognized breeds that may be present in mixed breed dogs, through analysis of more than 300 distinct genetic markers.

“The new test marks a major milestone in canine genetic science, by applying the results of proprietary genetic research to help identify the origins of physical and behavioral traits and, ultimately, help strengthen the pet-owner bond,” said Peter Markwell, DVM, chief science officer at Mars Veterinary.

“We are committed to using these diagnostics in concert with veterinarians to help promote responsible pet care.”

DNA is obtained from a small blood sample at a veterinary hospital and submitted. Two to three weeks after the test, Mars Veterinary will provide veterinarians and owners a report that includes the dog’s breed analysis and information on the appearance and behavioral characteristics of detected breeds.

This will enable veterinarians to work with owners to create a care and wellness plan for their dog covering aspects such as dietary, exercise and training needs, according to the company.

This is very interesting. I have a young smart mutt and would love to figure out his genes. I'm going to do it.
