A Short Respite From the World

It’s a treat to finally meet someone you talk and e-mail with frequently. Veterinary conventions often offer that very opportunity.

On Saturday evening, I had the pleasure of finally meeting Dr. Phil Zeltzman, the board-certified surgeon who writes the Surgical Insights column for Veterinary Practice News. He works at Valley Central Veterinary Referral Center in Whitehall, Pa., near Allentown.

Dr. Zeltzman was in San Diego for the annual conference of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He had been asked to lecture after his column about surgical drains appeared in the magazine. I couldn’t let him get so close to our editorial offices in Irvine, Calif., without getting to meet him. So, I headed down to San Diego.

Contributing editor Somyr McLean Perry joined me. At the Hyatt, where the conference was held, we also ran into Eklin Medical Systems’ Laurie Hallwyler and Patte Johnson. Eklin is the three-time sponsor of our “They Ate WHAT?” radiograph contest.

We all went to dinner in the Gas Lamp district at a great little Mexican restaurant called La Puerta.  Although the noise level made it tough to hear and the World Series blaring from the TV didn’t help, it didn’t stop us from visiting and learning a little bit more about each other.

Our non-business talk made the evening. With the barrage and intensity of business and election news today, and with the attendant stress they incite, it was nice to take a breather with friends.

The time for business returns soon enough. It’s Monday and we’re all back at our desks. But a casual dinner with friends in the veterinary industry was a high point of my weekend. I hope you were able to spend some similarly relaxing time this weekend with your friends.
