A Toast to Kindred Spirits

Pardon me for not standing.
I usually rise when being introduced to new people. But on my way to the VetPartners and CareCredit reception at the American Animal Hospital Association convention in Long Beach, Calif., I tangled with a gas pump hose. It won.
Right there at the gas station, in front of God and 5 o’clock traffic, I landed none too gracefully on my already bad knee, which responded with impressively rapid swelling and a rainbow of colors.
In Long Beach, I hobbled my way through the hotel and was greeted at the entry to the reception by Christine Merle, DVM, MBA, CVPM. Dr. Merle, executive director of VetPartners, graciously chased down a bag of ice and we chatted as I applied it.
Louis M. Gatto, CPA, of Gatto McFerson, the veterinary financial services and management consulting firm in Santa Monica, Calif., introduced himself. He expects the veterinary economic landscape to improve in the second quarter this year.
Behind us, Karen Felsted, CPA, MS, DVM, CVPM and CEO of the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues, mingled with a group that included Louise Dunn, owner of Snowgoose Veterinary Management Consulting of Greensboro, N.C.
As the evening wore on, the room became more crowded, and after a glass of Chardonnay (for medicinal purposes, of course it was time for me to head to Urgent Care. Heading for the exit, I spotted VeterinaryPracticeNews.com Staff Safari blogger Katherine Dobbs and made my way over to say hello. Dobbs, RVT, CVPM, PHR, is president of interface Veterinary HR Systems LLC of Appleton, Wis.
When I greeted her, she apologized for not standing. Instead, she pointed to her left foot, encased in a brace to ease the pain and swelling of a sprained ankle sustained going through airport security.
Clearly, we are kindred spirits.
