Best Wishes for the New Year--And a Resurgent Business Climate

A new year and new beginnings seem to go hand in hand.
And when that new year arrives after a particularly difficult one, it seems to be especially welcome.
So it’s with much hope and excitement that many in the veterinary community regard the beginning of 2010.
It’s too soon to know for sure, but there are signs that consumer confidence is on the rise. In a report issued Dec. 29, the Conference Board, based in New York, said its Consumer Confidence Index hit 52.9, up from 50.6 in November and 48.7 in October … not to mention its historic low of 25.3 in February.
The index is based on surveys of 5,000 U.S. households, conducted in the first three weeks of December.
People are still concerned about the economy, to be sure. But there seems to be a new sense of anticipation and hopefulness among at least some of our readers and contributors.
A number of exhibitors at the American Association of Equine Practitioners 55th annual conference earlier this month reported brisk business, and the convention itself drew its biggest attendance ever, 7,611.
Just a fluke? Maybe, and we’ll know for sure soon enough.
But in the meantime, I’m looking forward to the upcoming veterinary conferences with renewed enthusiasm.
Veterinary Practice News editors will be attending the North American Veterinary Conference in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 16-20 and Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas. Nev., Feb. 14-18. We’ll be at AAHA, ACVIM and AVMA as well.
Drop by our booth at the Gaylord Palms next month to say hello and weigh in with your take on the business climate.
And let’s hope that the energy and optimism that seem to have reappeared in veterinary business is more than just wishful thinking.
