Something for Everyone at Summer Conferences

It’s trade show season again, just in time for summer.
After a lull in April and May, the veterinary community has embarked again on conferences this month with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum, meeting this year in Anaheim, Calif.
The Southern California weather is cooperating—or maybe that should say “competing.”
Temperature is in the mid-70s and the June gloom has burned off, leaving blue skies and the lovely weather touted by local Chambers of Commerce.
Foot traffic at the trade show seemed slow on Thursday. Many of those in attendance were wearing shorts and T-shirts, suggesting that perhaps product browsing and continuing education might not have been foremost on their minds. After all, both theme parks of the Disney Resort are just across the street from the Anaheim Convention Center and the beach is about 20 minutes away.
But the people in the exhibit hall found plenty to keep them busy. Sound-Eklin’s introduction of the Axxent Veterinary Electronic Brachytherapy System for radiation therapy prompted some buzz.
The opening night reception on Thursday, sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, featured a California wine tasting party. On Friday evening, Nestle Purina is sponsoring a wine and cheese reception during the viewing of meticulously executed research posters in the exhibit hall. And later Friday, Bayer Animal Health is hosting the 2010 Bayer Dance Party.
And on Friday morning, the keynote address – “Extraordinary Veterinarian: Dr. Paul Pion, Dipl. ACVIM (cardiology)” – drew a standing-room-only crowd to Ballroom C in the convention center.
Pion, one of the founders of the Veterinary Information Network (VIN) and a researcher who discovered the importance of taurine to cats’ diets, was nominated by his fellow ACVIM diplomates to share his life story and challenge listeners to reflect on the choices we make that shape our lives.
As always, the conference provided veterinarians and staff the opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new acquaintances.
The thing I like most about working in the veterinary world is that I learn something new almost literally every day. That is especially true at conferences. And ACVIM begins a series of conferences that will keep us busy in the coming summer months.
Bring it on.
