The Orangutan and the Hound

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes the world can get really tiresome. Maybe "annoying" is a more a more appropriate characterization ... I get tired not so much of the news itself, but of the remonstrations that seem to invariably follow, whatever a particular story's subject might be.

Entertainment can be hard to take at times. Give me total escapism at the movies, not serious topics. "Date Night," yes! We have to face serious problems every day, and while I don't know about you, I need a break from the gravity of so much of the news.

Even "Life," the stunningly beautiful co-production of Discovery Channel and the BBC, managed to make me nuts the other night. The exquisitely photographed television series narrated by Oprah Winfrey, a follow-up to the 2007 nature series "Planet Earth," had me reaching for the remote pretty darned fast.

The subject was insects, which don't usually bother me. But in high definition and very, very close up, they are something else again.. A segment in the Australian outback shows male Dawson's bees fighting to the death for the right to claim a female emerging from her burrow. In the process, the series shows a single female in the foreground, while males are in a dogpile, fighting, all around her. Then, with a mere whisper of a breeze, the distinctive female head, severed from her body, blows out of the frame.

That was it for me! One click and the TV was off.

Then in my e-mail I encountered this link forwarded by an animal-loving friend. It won't cure the world's ills by any means, but it helped set a good mood for the week. It is taken from a National Georgaphic Channel show and re-creates the sweet story of an orangutan and a hound. It isn't earth shaking and maybe isn't even educational.

But it is a sweet tonic and made for a good way to start the week. Reality will wait a few minutes while you check out this video. Enjoy.
