Veterinary Practice News columnist and blogger Phil Zeltzman, DVM, is a board-certified surgeon who strives to keep our readers current on issues and viewpoints in veterinary surgery.
But he is passionate about other editorial pursuits as well, including a weekly newsletter he writes for pet owners. His newsletter is read in all 50 states and in 22 countries. Phil's labor of love was honored at the recents Cat Writers Association Conference. His newsletter featuring a piece titled "Tiny Beads Create a Big Revolution in Cancer Treatment" was awarded the Hartz Everyday Chewable Vitamin Award during festivities in White Plains, NY. Keep an eye out for Phil's story about pain management in the February 2010 issue of Dog Fancy, one of Veterinary Practice News' sister publications. Phil practices at Valley Central Veterinary Referral Center in Whitehall, Pa. You can find out more about the newsletter at his website, drphilzeltzman.com. ---------------------------

Dee Ellis, DVM, of Rockdale has been named Texas’ new state veterinarian and executive director of the Texas Animal Health Commission, the state’s livestock and poultry health regulatory agency.
“Dr. Ellis will be a fine state veterinarian and TAHC executive director,” said TAHC Chairman Ernie Morales of Devine, who also represents the feedlot industry on the 13-member commission. “For five years, Dr. Ellis has served as the TAHC assistant state veterinarian, and his work ethic, abilities, training, and qualifications are exemplary."

Marc Smith, DVM, and Casey Damron, DVM, both from Nashville, Tenn., have founded Pet-Tao Pet Foods, a new company that the veterinarians say combines Western nutritional science with Eastern food therapy.

The University of Saskatchewan’s Board of Governors has approved the appointment of Dr. Douglas Freeman as the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s new dean.
