Our Annual Contest: Critter X-rays Again Include a Snake

By Marilyn Iturri

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a moment, we thought that we might not get even one snake X-ray.

That would have been unique, considering that radiographs of snakes took top honors in the first two years of Veterinary Practice News’ “They Ate WHAT?” contest, sponsored by Eklin Medical Systems of Santa Clara, Calif.

We needn’t have feared.

In the end, we did get a radiograph of a snake. A humongous one—a 12-foot-long, 65-pound Burmese python that far outweighed the previous competiting snakes.

Along the way, we were also treated to views of the innards of a frog, a rabbit, a duck, a cockatiel, a hamster and various unfortunate cats and dogs. The creatures had dined on things that included rocks, marbles, sewing needles, hair ties, shish-kabob skewers and other inedibles.

As usual, we had a lot of fun looking at the various things that you, our readers, get to deal with routinely.

Thanks to all of you who entered the contest for making the effort. Your contributions have helped make the contest the reader favorite it is.

As for trends, many more entries this year were shot with digital radiography.

“It was interesting to see the marked increase in digital radiographs compared to past context,” said Gary R. Cantu, president and chief executive officer of Eklin.

“We always marvel at the wide variety of species represented in the entries. It reminds us of the extensive breadth of knowledge needed by a veterinarian for rendering excellent clinical care.”

Contest winners in two categories – professional and student – will be announced in the June issue of Veterinary Practice News.

We’ll also share many of the runners-up, both in the magazine and online.

The 2008 contest judges are  Matt Wright, DVM, Dipl. ACVR, of AnimalInsides.com; Brian Poteet, DVM, Dipl. ACVR, of Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston; and Rachel Schochet, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVR, of Southern California Veterinary Imaging.

Don’t forget to come back in June to share in the fun.
