Seasons of Change: Goodbye and Hello
By Marilyn Iturri

Few people are lucky enough to work at jobs they truly like, let alone with people they like and care about.
I count myself among the lucky.
I’ve always enjoyed publishing, animals and science, so working on a trade magazine that reports on the veterinary industy has been a pleasure. In my role as editor, I’ve met a lot of good people, and I’ve been lucky enough to work beside an exceptional colleague these past few years.
Some of you may have spoken or corresponded with Managing Editor Somyr Perry. This week, Somyr begins a new job with a different company in San Diego.
Somyr started at our company as an intern five years ago, and brought with her 15 years’ experience as a veterinary nurse, a strong work ethic and a great sense of humor.
When an opening came up on Veterinary Practice News, we hired Somyr.
In the time since, Somyr and I have become close friends. I’ve watched her grow into a competent and self-assured journalist, and, on the personal side, get married and become a mom.
While I’m saddened to see Somyr move on to the next chapter in her career, I’m also happy to be able to work once again with a former colleague from my years at The Orange County Register.
Ken Niedziela is the new managing editor for Veterinary Practice News. His experience includes stints in reporting, editing, design and production, and he is highly skilled in the many facets of publishing. Like me, he’s also a news junkie.
I look forward to working with Ken to continue to make Veterinary Practice News the magazine readers want it to be.
So Godspeed, Somyr. And welcome, Ken. If the past five years are any indication, it’ll be a blast.
