Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC recalled several lots of Purina Honor Show Chow and DuMOR Show Poultry feed products due to a lack of added vitamin D, the company reported today.
Inadequate levels of vitamin D in a bird’s diet for more than two to three weeks may cause bone weakness, fractures, joint problems and potentially death if the birds are not exposed to direct sunlight daily, the company reported. Birds living outdoors may not experience symptoms due to the formation of natural vitamin D that occurs with exposure to a minimum of 30 minutes of direct sunlight daily, the company reported.
The company has not received any reports of animal illnesses involving the recalled products. A formulation software conversion caused the issue, the company reported.
The products were distributed nationwide and were manufactured between May 23 and July 20, 2012, at the company’s plants in Milford, Ind.; Nashville, Tenn.; and St. Joseph, Mo.

Purnia Feed encouraged customers to return remaining products to their local dealer or retailer to receive a refund.
The company did not say if the recall was related to the recent string of recalls of other Land O’Lakes products manufactured at or using ingredients from the company’s Richmond, Ind., plant. The company started recalling feed manufactured by its subsidiary PMI Nutrition on July 3, 2012, and added additional PMI products to the recall on July 6. On July 13, the company added a bevy of additional PMI products to the recall, along with feed manufactured by Purina Feed and Feed Solutions. The expansion continued July 20 with additional PMI Nutrition brands.
Land O’Lakes did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
