The company is recalling one lot (lot 11031) of its Doggie Wishbone treats, item# 29050, UPC 2280829050, with a “Best By” date of Jan. 30, 2012. The product was shipped to distributors in 10 states: California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, New York, Rhode Island and Washington. Those distributors have been notified, according to the company. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration detected salmonella during a routine sampling, a company spokeswoman said. No illnesses have been reported and there have been no consumer complaints, according to Merrick. Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans, according to the company. Dog owners are urged to contact their veterinarian if their pet has consumed the recalled product and is exhibiting these symptoms. Humans can also become infected, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the treats or surfaces exposed to the recalled product. Symptoms in humans may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Consumers who have purchased the recalled Doggie Wishbone treats are urged to return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
