Educating veterinary professionals and boosting their confidence in diagnosing and treating oral and dental diseases in pets is central to the 2026 Global Dental Guidelines.

Released by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), the updated guidelines build on its 2019 edition and reflect advances in veterinary dentistry. Updates include sections on dental and maxillofacial trauma, juvenile pathology, the role of veterinary nurses and technicians in dentistry, and ergonomics, as well as an expanded section on radiographic interpretation.

"The WSAVA Global Dental Guidelines are one of the most important contributions we can make to veterinary dentistry," says Dr. Brook Niemiec, co-author of the 2026 guidelines, in a statement. "The first edition was a tremendous success, and we are confident that this updated version will help veterinary professionals strengthen their knowledge, improve the dental care they provide and, ultimately, help their patients live healthier and happier lives."

The guidelines cover common conditions, diagnostic procedures, treatment, anesthesia and pain management, home dental care and nutrition. They also emphasize the connection between oral health and animal welfare, while outlining risks associated with anesthesia-free dentistry.
