As 2026 begins, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) encourages pet owners to prioritize their animals’ health and happiness with simple resolutions. Check out key points you can share with clients as we ring in the New Year.

As 2026 begins, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) encourages veterinary professionals to guide clients in making simple resolutions that can improve pets' health and well-being. Clinics can also introduce a "New Year's Pet Health Review" to reinforce preventive care and client education. Key tips to share with clients include:

  • Schedule regular veterinary checkups – Follow recommendations for vaccinations, diet, parasite control, and dental care.
  • Update pet identification – Ensure pets are microchipped with current contact information and wear ID/ license tags if outdoors.
  • Commit to exercise and mental stimulation – Provide age-appropriate physical activity, enrichment, and training to strengthen the human–animal bond.
  • Prepare for emergencies – Create a pet first-aid kit and disaster plan with food, medications, and important documents; know the nearest 24/7 emergency clinic.
  • Monitor quality of life – Watch for behavior or health changes and consult a veterinarian promptly.
