The Halifax Humane Society has launched a three-month initiative offering cat neutering for $0.05 as part of efforts to reduce pet overpopulation and mark its 90th anniversary.

Running April 1 through June 30 at the organization's spay and neuter clinic in Daytona Beach, Fla., the "Neuter Scooter for a Nickel" campaign provides surgeries for five cents. The program targets both owned and unowned cats, with designated clinic days and intake requirements, including humane traps for community cats.

The organization aims to complete 900 male cat neuter procedures during the campaign and has increased daily surgical capacity to meet anticipated demand. The package includes surgery, analgesia, rabies vaccination, and either microchipping for owned cats or ear-tipping for community cats.

Officials say focusing on male cats may help reduce unplanned litters and limit population growth in free-roaming and owned cat populations.
