When five-year-old male Chihuahua Tommy developed tremors and hyperactivity at home, his condition deteriorated rapidly, progressing to coma and respiratory failure. Suspected serotonin syndrome from accidental exposure to ADHD medication led to severe neurologic dysfunction, while aspiration pneumonia further compromised his breathing.

Tommy was transferred to DoveLewis 24/7 Animal Hospital, one of the few facilities in the region equipped for mechanical ventilation and round-the-clock critical care. On arrival, the dog was reportedly comatose with severely impaired lung function. Immediate intubation and life support allowed his lungs to rest while the critical care team treated both the suspected toxicity and pneumonia.

"Mechanical ventilation gave us the time we needed, but it was the full critical care team—monitoring, adjusting, supporting around the clock—that brought him back," says Hannah Marshall, DVM, DACVECC, DoveLewis critical care specialist and intern director.

After two days on life support, the Chihuahua gradually regained reflexes, opened his eyes, and eventually began breathing on his own. Continued care helped restore his neurological and lung function, allowing him to return home with a tailored medication plan.

"His recovery was the result of timing, teamwork, and technology," Dr. Marshall adds. "Seeing him wake up and wag his tail again—it's why we do what we do."
