Veterinarians and pet owners can now take proactive steps to prevent wounds that can create ideal conditions for New World screwworm infection. Elanco Animal Health Incorporated has received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Credelio™ CAT (lotilaner) to treat New World screwworm (NWS) infestations in cats. This marks the first FDA EUA for treating NWS in felines. With confirmed cases of NWS reportedly detected near the U.S.-Mexico border, the authorization provides veterinarians and pet owners with a treatment option for cats and kittens if the fly enters the U.S. “The FDA’s swift and thorough evaluation of the scientific evidence showing Credelio CAT’s potential effectiveness against New World screwworm in cats is greatly appreciated,” says Dr. Ellen de Brabander, executive vice president of Innovation and Regulatory Affairs at Elanco. The EUA is reportedly based on research evaluating the efficacy of Credelio CAT against Old World screwworm in feline patients, and Credelio’s efficacy against New World screwworm in dogs. Last month, Credelio received the first-ever FDA EUA for treating NWS in dogs. New World screwworm infestations begin when female flies lay eggs on open wounds, with larvae burrowing into living tissue, causing severe damage or death if untreated. The U.S. Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service recommends preventing infestations by protecting animals from wounds caused by flies, ticks, and other parasites. “Given New World screwworm’s aggressive and invasive nature, any minor wounds…can serve as an entry point,” says Dr. Casey Locklear, Elanco veterinarian and parasiticide lead.
