Dr. Constable’s appointment is subject to the approval of the Illinois board of trustees, the university reported Friday. He would replace Herb Whiteley, DVM, Ph.D., Dipl. ACVP, who will begin a sabbatical in January after 12 years as dean. Dr. Whiteley is expected to return from his sabbatical to work on collaboration between the College of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Medicine. "We are grateful for Dr. Whiteley’s many years of leadership and look forward to his continued service to the college and university,” said Ilesanmi Adesida, the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Constable joined Illinois in 1993 as an assistant professor in the department of veterinary clinical medicine. He served as interim head of the department in 2004 and 2005 before leaving for Purdue. "His broad knowledge of the field and commitment to the highest academic principles make him an ideal person for the job,” Adesida said. Constable’s clinical and research interests include acid-base physiology, fluid therapy, shock, calf diarrhea, surgical conditions of the bovine abdomen and veterinary education. A former agricultural animal veterinarian in Australia and a mixed-animal practitioner in England, Constable co-authored the 10th edition of "Veterinary Medicine: A Textbook of the Diseases of Cattle, Horses, Sheep, Pigs, and Goats.” He also co-wrote more than 180 articles in peer-reviewed publications and 30 book chapters. Constable earned his veterinary degree in 1982 from the University of Melbourne in Australia. He completed an ambulatory internship and food animal medicine and surgery residency at Ohio State University, where he earned his master’s and doctorate degrees. As dean, Constable will oversee the Chicago Center for Veterinary Medicine, which features a primary-care clinic, several veterinary specialties and outreach to prospective students from backgrounds underrepresented in the veterinary profession. <HOME>
