KC-Area Domestic Violence Center Opens Pet ShelterJune 15, 2012 The Rose Brooks Center, a Kansas City, Mo.-based family violence agency, in partnership with Bayer Animal Health, opened a shelter to provide lodging for pets of families living at the center’s emergency shelter. The center held a grand opening for the Paws Place pet shelter on Wednesday, featuring an appearance by Hank, a Great Dane that served as inspiration for the pet shelter. Hank suffered two broken ribs and a fractured hip when he protected his owner from her boyfriend. The center allowed Hank to stay despite its “no animal” policy. “Our work every day is to keep families safe and help them rebuild their lives,” said Susan Miller, Rose Brooks Center CEO, “And pets are part of that family too. Feed Recalled On Suspicion Of Toxic Levels Of Monensin SodiumJune 15, 2012 Western Feed LLC recalled two lots of Kountry Buffet 14-percent feed after reports of horses dying as a result of consuming the product, the company reported today. The feed, distributed to retailers in Nebraska and Wyoming from Dec. 2, 2011 through Dec. 15, 2011, may contain the drug monensin sodium (Rumensin), which is approved for use in some livestock and poultry species, but can be fatal to horses if fed at sufficiently high levels, according to the Morrill, Neb.-based company. The recalled lots, M718430 and M720280, are packaged in 50 lb. bags bearing the Payback logo with the attached tag identifying the products as Kountry Buffet 14-percent. The lot number is located toward the bottom of the tag, below the “Feeding Directions.” Retailers have already removed the recalled lots from their stores, according to Western Feed. Initial testing on the horses that died from consuming the feed indicated the presence of a potentially harmful level of monensin sodium in the two recalled lots, the company said, and additional testing is underway. More Dog Food Recalled Due To AflatoxinJune 15, 2012 A Louisiana store, Petrus Feed & Seed, voluntarily recalled several lots of dry dog food because they contained aflatoxin above acceptable levels. The food was manufactured at a Cargill plant in LeCompte, La., between Dec. 1, 2010, and Dec. 1, 2011. The recall applies to 21 percent Protein Dog Food, packaged in 40-pound Petrus Feed bags with packaging date codes 4K1011 through 4K1335. The affected dry dog food was sold at Petrus Feed & Seed in Alexandria, La. No adverse health effects related to the food have been reported, and Petrus said it implemented the recall as a precaution. The company urged consumers to return any recalled food to the store for a full refund, regardless of whether the bags are opened or unopened. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mold byproduct. Pets that consumed the recalled product and showed signs of sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian, the company said.
