For most veterinarians, the decision to enter the profession was driven by a passion for animal care, not a love of paperwork. Yet in many practices today, prescription management has become one of the most time-consuming administrative tasks on the docket. Between fielding phone calls, sorting through faxes, handwriting approvals, and re-entering data across multiple systems, a typical veterinary practice may spend 400 to 600 staff hours annually on prescription management alone.¹

That figure may sound surprising, but it reflects the cumulative toll of a workflow that has changed little even as the rest of veterinary medicine has modernized. The good news is that the profession is beginning to catch up with human medicine's move toward e-prescribing. The prescriber reviews the request and, if approved, confirms it digitally. Modern platforms can integrate with a practice's existing patient management system to match records and prepopulate relevant data, such as directions for use, patient and client information, and prescriber details. Once confirmed, the prescription is transmitted electronically to the dispensing pharmacy, and the client receives an automated notification that the prescription has been approved.

Much of the process, from receipt of the request to pharmacy transmission, can be completed without a single phone call, without reentering data into multiple portals, and without the client needing to call the practice for a status update. Because these platforms are cloud-based, they are typically accessible from any browser, requiring no special software installation, which lowers the barrier to adoption for practices of all sizes.

The efficiency gains from transitioning to digital prescription management are both operational and financial. Consolidating all prescription activity into a single platform eliminates the need to log into multiple external pharmacy portals each day. This alone can save considerable staff time and reduce the cognitive load on front-office teams.

According to a 2025 white paper published by First Data Bank, the efficiencies gained from implementing digital tools and AI-driven workflow solutions can reduce the time spent on prescription management by 30 to 40 percent, ultimately saving over 150 staff hours per veterinary practice per year.¹ Those recaptured hours represent real capacity that can be redirected toward client communication, patient care, and other revenue-generating activities.

Beyond time savings, automation reduces the frequency of data-entry errors. When prescription details are prepopulated from existing medical records rather than manually transcribed, the opportunities for misspellings, dosing mistakes, and duplicate entries diminish substantially. Common built-in safeguards include rejecting a prescription request if the patient is overdue for an examination, automatically detecting and removing duplicate requests, and cross-referencing prescribed drug names against a standardized database to catch misspellings or potential errors. These automated checks can save time while also providing practices with greater confidence that every prescription is accurately documented and compliant with applicable regulations.

Veterinary medicine is not a static profession, and practice management should not be either. As client expectations evolve and patient volumes grow, the administrative infrastructure supporting prescription management must keep pace.
